"Gordie's stats speak for themselves. To play the physically intense game of hockey until the age of 52 is remarkable and will remain in the record books forever. When we retired Gordie's number in 1984, it was a tribute to his talent and the major contributions he had made to the Detroit Red Wings and their success over the years." "He was an effortless skater. I used to see him play in his prime in the late 40's and early 50's when I was living in Montreal. That was when Detroit finished in first place for seven consecutive seasons from 1949 to 1955. Howe could have played the whole game. He never got tired. He was like Nick Lindstrom is today. He was the strongest player in the league for many years and no one was close to him in strength. In the first year of expansion, he was with a mediocre Detroit team and he got 103 points and he was 40 years of age." "Every sport has its legends, and hockey has other legends, but for me and for his generation, there is nobody else but Godie Howe. Howe represents a great deal about what hockey, in its purest sense, really meant." "He did a lot of amazing things. He could shoot both right handed and left handed. He could play defense, right wing or center. They all talk about Rocket Richard, however, Richard was a great hockey player from the blue line in. Gordie could check. He could do everything." "We were in Cincinnati one night and Robbie Ftorek was cheap-shotting everybody. He crosschecked Mark in the face and when Gordie got back to the bench, he slammed his stick down and said, 'That's it, I've had enough'. He didn't do anything the next shift or the shift after that. The third time we're out together and he goes behind the net with Ftorek. He brings his stick up and slices him right across the face. Ftorek's just lying there behind the net in a pool of his own blood. If an opponent did something that Howe didn't like, he would pay a severe price. Howe had his own code of justice, and most of Howe's opponents understood that. Apparently, Ftorek didn't understand it, or chose to ignore it." |
